The Main Difference
MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5 are separate trading platforms. MT4 remains widely used for forex-focused trading, while MT5 offers more market types, additional order options, and newer platform features. An EA built for one platform does not run on the other without a compatible version.

Check EA Compatibility First
Download the exact MT4 or MT5 version listed for the EA. Installing an .ex4 file in MT5, or an .ex5 file in MT4, will not work. Also check that your broker offers the required platform for your chosen account.
Compare Broker Conditions
1. Confirm the platform is available for your account type
2. Check the symbol names, spreads, commissions, and leverage
3. Verify whether hedging or netting applies to the account
4. Test the EA on the platform and broker you intend to use
Choose Based on Your Needs
Choose MT4 when the EA you need is MT4-only or you prefer its established forex ecosystem. Choose MT5 when your EA supports it and you want its newer testing tools or wider instrument support. The EA's documented requirements should take priority over general platform preference.
Test Before Trading Live
Use a demo account to confirm installation, trading permissions, and execution behavior. Platform choice does not remove market risk, so use position sizes and drawdown limits that fit your trading plan.
